Submillimeter Observations of Titan: Global Measures of Stratospheric

چکیده

Interferometric observations of the atmosphere of Titan were performed with the Submillimeter Array on two nights in February 2004 to investigate the global average vertical distributions of several molecular species above the tropopause. Rotational transitions of CO, isomers of HCN, and HC3N were simultaneously recorded. The abundance of CO is determined to be 51±4 ppm, constant with altitude. The vertical profile of HCN is dependent upon the assumed temperature but generally increases from 30 ppb at the condensation altitude (∼83 km) to 5 ppm at ∼300 km. Further, the central core of the HCN emission is strong and can be reproduced only if the upper stratospheric temperature increases with altitude. The isotopic ratios are determined to be C/C=132±25 and N/N=94±13 assuming the Coustenis & Bézard (1995) temperature profile. If the Lellouch (1990) temperature profile is assumed the ratios decrease to C/C=108±20 and N/N=72±9. The vertical profile of HC3N is consistent with that derived by Marten et al. (2002). Titan: Aerosol Photochemistry and Variations Related to the Sunspot Cycle1

A photochemical theory is proposed for producing complex polymers in a methane atmosphere. It is argued that the polyacetylenes (C2nH2) are the most likely precursor molecules for the formation of the stratospheric haze layer on Titan. The production of polyacetylenes involves a strong positive feedback, leading to more production of polyactylenes. The thermosphere of Titan may undergo substant...

Vertical Distribution of C3-hydrocarbons in the Stratosphere of Titan

Motivated by the recent detection of propene (C3H6) in the atmosphere of Titan, we use a one-dimensional Titan photochemical model with an updated eddy diffusion profile to systematically study the vertical profiles of the stable species in the C3-hydrocarbon family. We find that the stratospheric volume mixing ratio of propene (C3H6) peaks at 150 km with a value of 5 × 10, which is in good agr...

Propane on Titan

We present the first observations of propane (C 3 H 8) on Titan that unambiguously resolve propane features from other numerous stratospheric emissions. This is accomplished using a R = λ/δλ ≈ 10 5 spectrometer (TEXES) to observe propane's ν 26 rotation-vibration band near 748 cm −1. We find a best-fit fractional abundance of propane in Titan's stratosphere of (6.2 ± 1.2) × 10 −7 in the altitud...

Radar Scattering from Titan and Saturn’s Icy Satellites Using the Cassini Spacecraft

Titan is the largest moon of Saturn and the second largest moon in the solar system. It has a thick atmosphere rich in nitrogen and hydrocarbons, analogous to the atmosphere of early, prebiotic Earth. This atmosphere inhibits observations of the surface using traditional optical methods. The Cassini-Huygens spacecraft (a joint endeavor of NASA/ESA/ASI) began orbiting Saturn in 2004, with a flyb...

The global energy balance of Titan

[1] The global energy budget of planets and their moons is a critical factor to influence the climate change on these objects. Here we report the first measurement of the global emitted power of Titan. Long-term (2004–2010) observations conducted by the Composite Infrared Spectrometer (CIRS) onboard Cassini reveal that the total emitted power by Titan is (2.84 0.01) 10 watts. Together with prev...
